Software Development Apprenticeship

Baltic Apprenticeships are delighted to be working in partnership with Willow Health to recruit their next Software Development Apprentice. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the team, develop their technical skills and gain valuable hands-on experience while working towards a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

This role is for someone who is obsessed with technology, programming and the craft of producing good-quality software. You might already spend your own time coding, taking things apart, building small tools or trying to understand why one solution is better than another.

You do not need professional development experience, but you must be able to demonstrate genuine programming ability.

You will work alongside experienced IT and technology professionals, building real tools and learning how software is designed, developed, tested, secured and supported in a working healthcare environment.

Within this role you will complete a level 4 Software development apprenticeship with Baltic Apprenticeships.

A Typical Day in the Job:

• Design, develop and maintain internal software tools, applications, integrations, APIs and workflow automations.
• Write clear, secure, reliable and maintainable code, understanding and confidently explaining technical decisions.
• Test and debug software systematically, investigating defects and resolving issues in both independently written and AI-assisted code.
• Use AI responsibly for research, learning, prototyping and productivity, while reviewing and challenging AI-generated code for quality, security and reliability.
• Work with databases and structured data under supervision, translating operational challenges into practical and effective technical solutions.
• Participate in development processes, including code reviews, version control, change management, releases, documentation, testing and responding constructively to feedback.
• Develop technical skills continuously, refactoring and improving existing solutions while contributing ideas to improve systems, processes and ways of working.
• Full training and support will be provided by your workplace mentor and from the Baltic team.

Desired Qualities, Skills and Knowledge:

• Genuine passion for programming, software and technology, with a strong curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
• Evidence of coding outside compulsory education, such as personal projects, experiments, online courses or self-directed learning.
• Ability to write, read and understand code independently, without relying entirely on AI-generated solutions.
• Interest in producing well-structured, readable and maintainable software, with an appreciation for good coding practices.
• Logical, methodical and persistent approach to problem-solving, including the patience to investigate and resolve defects systematically.
• Curiosity to understand how and why things work, with a willingness to question solutions and learn from mistakes.
• Open to code reviews, feedback and collaboration, with the ability to communicate technical ideas and respond constructively to feedback.
• Reliable, professional and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage tasks independently and work effectively in a remote environment.
• Some practical experience or knowledge of programming and development tools, such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, C#, Java, Git, APIs, databases, testing or cloud platforms.
• Responsible approach to AI and technology, with an interest in areas such as AI, automation, cybersecurity or healthcare technology, while retaining ownership and understanding of work produced with AI tools.
• Grade 4/C in English or 4/C in Math's GCSE
