What is an IT Apprenticeship?

An IT apprenticeship is a practical, hands-on way for participants to learn technical skills while earning a salary. Apprentices work as part of a real IT team and receive structured, expert-led training and support.

Apprentices develop core IT capabilities, such as troubleshooting and software support, and the professional behaviours that underpin strong IT performance – clear communication, customer service, problem-solving, and the ability to work methodically under pressure.

IT apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to develop talent, close digital skills gaps, and strengthen in-house IT expertise. Apprenticeships can be fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or Government co-investment, making IT talent development accessible for organisations of any size.

What Is a Level 3 IT Apprenticeship?

A Level 3 IT apprenticeship is equivalent to an A-Level qualification and teaches core digital and technical skills. It’s designed for those starting out in IT support roles or employees who need foundational IT knowledge to perform their job effectively.

Throughout the programme, learners explore key areas such as troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining hardware and software, configuring devices, and supporting users across an organisation. This apprenticeship prepares learners for roles such as IT Support Technician, Service Desk Analyst, or Technical Support Assistant.

By the end of the programme, apprentices will achieve a Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification and be equipped to manage routine IT tasks, solve common technical problems, and contribute to keeping an organisation’s technology running smoothly.

What Is a Level 4 IT Apprenticeship?

A Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeship is equivalent to the first year of a university degree and focuses on developing advanced technical capabilities in designing, building, and maintaining network infrastructure. It’s ideal for individuals who already have some foundational IT knowledge and want to progress into more specialised networking roles.

During the programme, apprentices learn to configure and manage network devices, optimise performance, and resolve complex connectivity issues, preparing individuals for roles such as Network Engineer, Network Technician, Infrastructure Technician, or Network Support Specialist.

By the end of the programme, participants will achieve a Level 4 Network Engineer qualification and be capable of independently managing network projects, enhancing organisational resilience, improving system performance, and contributing to the long-term stability of IT infrastructure.

What Is a Degree Apprenticeship?

A Degree IT Apprenticeship combines full-time employment with university-level study, enabling individuals to earn a Bachelor’s degree while gaining practical, on-the-job experience in a real business environment. Designed to meet the needs of modern employers, IT degree apprenticeships develop highly skilled professionals who can contribute to complex technical projects and support long-term digital transformation strategies.

Throughout the programme, apprentices build in-depth technical expertise in areas such as software development, cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, network engineering, and digital technology solutions. This blend of academic learning and hands-on workplace experience prepares apprentices to progress into advanced IT roles, including Software Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst, Data Scientist, Network Engineer, IT Project Manager, or Solutions Architect.

Why Choose IT Apprenticeships?

IT apprenticeships support both new and existing team members to develop the essential soft skills required for IT support and service delivery roles. Alongside technical training, apprentices learn how to communicate effectively with users, manage support tickets professionally, and resolve issues calmly under pressure in real workplace environments.

These transferable skills are critical to delivering high-quality IT support services, improving end-user satisfaction, and enabling efficient day-to-day IT operations. For IT managers and employers, this results in a well-rounded IT team that not only understands the technology, but also manages people, processes, and customer expectations effectively.

IT apprenticeships often include the opportunity to work towards industry-recognised certifications such as Microsoft, CompTIA, or AWS, providing apprentices with a clear pathway for ongoing professional development alongside their apprenticeship training.

These additional qualifications help employers strengthen in-house technical capability without the cost or administrative burden of sourcing separate external training. For IT managers, this provides confidence that their teams are being trained to current industry standards, with the skills and knowledge required to support modern IT environments.

IT apprenticeships provide a cost-effective and sustainable way to develop long-term IT talent. Apprentices gain hands-on experience using your organisation’s systems, tools, and processes, enabling them to grow into highly capable team members who are well aligned with your business and technology environment.

This approach helps employers reduce recruitment pressures, improve staff retention, and build a stable IT workforce. Over time, apprentices can progress into more advanced roles such as second-line IT support, infrastructure engineering, cybersecurity, or cloud-focused positions, creating a talent pipeline that supports ongoing business growth.

FAQS FOR IT APPRENTICESHIPS

FAQs for Employers

IT apprenticeships are paid roles where someone works in your business while training with an approved IT apprenticeship provider. You provide real work, support and a salary; the provider delivers structured IT training and helps monitor progress and compliance.

IT apprenticeship training providers help you identify the right apprenticeship standard, advertise your vacancy, screen applicants and match you with suitable candidates.

They also support with off-the-job training, handle individual learning plans, support with reviews, and prepare your apprentice for End-Point Assessment.

When looking for an IT Apprenticeship provider, check the provider’s Ofsted rating, completion rates, QAR data, and experience with IT apprenticeships. Look for strong employer reviews, flexible delivery, and clear support for both you and your apprentices.

A Level 3 IT apprenticeship is equivalent to A levels. It’s ideal for new starters or junior staff who are building foundational IT skills.

Level 3 apprenticeships focus on core technical abilities such as IT support, troubleshooting, networking basics and digital systems, making them a strong fit for entry‑level roles and growing early‑stage talent within your organisation.

A Level 4 IT apprenticeship is a higher apprenticeship, roughly equivalent to the first year of a degree. It suits staff with existing IT skills who are ready for more complex work, such as network engineering.

Levy-paying employers usually fund IT apprenticeships through their Apprenticeship Levy funds.

Non‑levy employers normally pay 5% of the training cost, with government funding the rest, plus you pay the apprentice’s salary (at least National Minimum Wage).

However, if the apprentice is aged 16–22 years old, employers do not pay the 5% contribution as the government fully funds the training costs.

FAQs for Learners

An IT apprenticeship is a paid job where you learn on the job while training with an IT apprenticeship provider. You gain real work experience, a salary and recognised qualifications, without paying tuition fees yourself.

A Level 3 IT apprenticeship is an apprenticeship equivalent to A level study. It’s a great next step after GCSEs or for people with an interest in IT who want to build core skills for roles like IT support technician, helpdesk analyst or junior digital support.

A Level 4 IT apprenticeship is a higher apprenticeship, similar in level to the first year of a degree. It’s ideal if you’ve already done a Level 3, A levels or have some IT experience and want roles like software developer, data analyst or network engineer.

You usually need to be 16+, live and work in the UK, and not be in full‑time education. Individual IT apprenticeship providers may also ask for certain GCSEs (often English and maths) or some IT knowledge, especially for Level 4 IT apprenticeships.

Compare IT apprenticeship providers by the standards they offer, their Ofsted rating and learner reviews – also look at how they deliver training (online, in‑person or blended) and the level of support they provide throughout your apprenticeship.
