AI apprenticeships help organisations build practical AI skills by recruiting new talent and upskilling existing employees. Explore everything you need to know before choosing the right programme.
An AI apprenticeship is a government-funded training programme that enables organisations to develop new talent and upskill existing employees with practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills while they work within a business.
Apprentices use AI tools and apply techniques to genuine business challenges while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Depending on the programme, learners will develop skills in areas such as generative AI, automation, digital transformation, responsible AI and process improvement, and because these skills are developed and applied throughout the apprenticeship, organisations can improve productivity and accelerate AI adoption from day one.
AI apprenticeships offer a practical, cost-effective way to develop AI skills across your organisation.
AI apprenticeships help employers:
Learners apply their learning throughout the apprenticeship, and organisations begin seeing value long before the programme is complete. Employees continue contributing in their role while developing the skills needed to help the organisation use AI more effectively, solve business challenges and support future growth.
AI apprenticeships enable employees to develop new AI skills while continuing in their role. Learning is designed to complement day-to-day responsibilities, allowing learners to apply new knowledge directly to their work and support real business objectives throughout the programme.
Training is delivered through a blend of online learning, workshops, one-to-one coaching and workplace projects, with dedicated support from experienced coaches.
Depending on the apprenticeship, learners may develop skills in areas such as generative AI, Microsoft Copilot, automation, digital transformation, AI governance and responsible AI, helping organisations overcome common AI adoption challenges while giving employees the confidence to apply AI safely and effectively.
AI apprenticeships are suitable for organisations of all sizes looking to build practical AI skills, supporting both workforce development and new talent.
As AI becomes an increasingly valuable workplace skill, AI skills training is no longer just for technical teams. AI apprenticeships can support employees across a wide range of functions, including operations, marketing, HR, finance, customer service and traditional digital roles. The most suitable apprenticeship will depend on your organisation’s goals and the skills you want to develop.

Level 4 AI for Business Automation Apprenticeship
This programme is suitable for organisations eager to streamline workflows, reduce manual tasks and implement AI-powered automation to improve operational efficiency.
Organisations often begin with a small number of AI users before expanding adoption across the wider workforce. AI apprenticeships help create a consistent approach to AI skills, confidence and governance across different teams.
AI apprenticeships enable learners to develop practical AI skills while applying their learning directly to business objectives in the workplace.
AI apprenticeships help learners:
• Develop in-demand AI skills that are increasingly valued across industries.
• Apply learning in the workplace, building confidence through real business challenges.
• Gain a nationally recognised qualification alongside practical experience.
• Develop skills in areas such as generative AI, automation, Microsoft Copilot, digital transformation and responsible AI.
• Strengthen problem-solving, digital and analytical skills that can be applied across a wide range of roles.
• Support career progression by developing specialist knowledge and future-ready capabilities.
• Learn from experienced coaches and industry experts throughout the programme.
• Build confidence using AI effectively, responsibly and ethically in the workplace.
As AI continues to transform the workplace, AI apprenticeships help learners develop the skills and confidence to apply AI effectively, support organisational goals and progress in their careers.
AI apprenticeships can support a wide range of roles, from specialist AI and digital roles to employees looking to enhance their existing role with practical AI skills. The career opportunities available will depend on the apprenticeship completed and the skills developed throughout the programme.
For learners pursuing technical or transformation-focused careers, AI apprenticeships can support or lead to roles such as: AI Enablement Specialist, AI & Digital Transformation Consultant, AI Engineer, AI Automation Specialist, Business Analyst, Digital Transformation Manager, Process Improvement Manager, AI Project Lead.
However, AI skills are no longer limited to technical careers. As AI becomes part of everyday work, many organisations are using AI apprenticeships to help existing employees improve productivity, automate routine tasks and make better use of AI within their current role.
This can include professionals working in: Marketing, Operations, Customer Service, HR, Sales, Finance, Data & Analytics, Project Management, Business Administration, Leadership and Management.
Yes! Many employers use AI apprenticeships to upskill existing staff. AI Apprenticeships allow organisations to build AI capability across their existing workforce, improve productivity and maximise apprenticeship funding while developing employees already familiar with the business.
The duration of an AI apprenticeship depends on the programme and apprenticeship level, with most taking between 12 and 18 months to complete, including the End-Point Assessment (EPA). Throughout the programme, learners remain in employment, developing practical AI skills that can be applied immediately.
If you’re looking to build AI skills in a shorter timeframe, we also offer a range of AI training courses, certifications and short courses designed to help individuals and organisations develop AI capability in as little as one day.

Levy-paying employers will usually fund AI apprenticeships using their Apprenticeship Levy funds.
For apprentices aged 16–24, apprenticeship training is fully funded for all employers. If you’re a levy-paying employer, the cost of training will be paid using your levy funds. If those funds have been exhausted, the Government will fully fund the remaining apprenticeship training costs.
For apprentices aged 25 and over, non-levy employers contribute 5% towards apprenticeship training costs, with the Government funding the remaining 95%. If you’re a levy-paying employer and your levy funds have been exhausted, you’ll contribute 25% of the training costs, with the Government funding the remaining 75%.
In addition to any training costs, employers are responsible for paying their apprentice’s salary, which must be at least the applicable National Minimum Wage.

All AI apprenticeships require apprentices to complete off-the-job training, which is dedicated learning time completed during normal working hours. Despite its name, it isn’t additional work completed outside of the learner’s role or in their own time.
Off-the-job hours are easily made up of activities such as technical training sessions, live workshops, one-to-one coaching, online learning, workplace projects, independent study and assessments. Many day-to-day tasks can also contribute where they support the knowledge, skills and behaviours being developed through the apprenticeship.
The total number of off-the-job hours required will vary slightly per programme.
The AI tools covered will depend on the apprenticeship, but learners may gain experience using technologies such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Microsoft Power Platform and other AI and automation tools.
Our AI programmes are tool-agnostic, focusing on transferable skills such as prompt engineering, responsible AI, automation and AI adoption rather than a single software platform. This ensures learners can apply their knowledge confidently as AI technologies continue to evolve.
Our team can help you review the most suitable AI apprenticeship for your organisation, discuss funding options and guide you through the enrolment process. Once you’ve decided on the right programme, we’ll work with you to plan the most appropriate start date for your learner(s).
Entry requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship. Some programmes are designed for beginners, while more advanced apprenticeships may require previous experience or technical knowledge. Our team can help identify the most suitable programme for you!
No, you don’t need coding experience for an AI Apprenticeship. Many AI apprenticeships focus on applying AI within a business environment rather than developing software. Some more technical programmes may include coding or automation concepts where relevant.
