From IT Apprentice to Network Engineer: Jason's Distinction Story at Capgemini
Jason Omondi completed his Level 3 IT and Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeships with distinction at Capgemini. Here's how a tech apprenticeship has turned him into trusted engineer - and what it could mean for your career.
When Jason Omondi began his IT apprenticeship journey at Capgemini, he knew he wanted to learn by doing. What he didn’t expect was just how far that approach would take him. Two years on, he has completed both his Level 3 IT Technician and Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeships with distinction – emerging as a trusted engineer within his team.
Jason’s pathway is a clear example of what can happen when practical learning, the right support, and real responsibility come together – building the skills and the confidence that continue to shape the next steps in his career.
Why Jason Chose an IT Apprenticeship over University
Jason knew early on that a traditional academic route wasn’t the right fit for him. He wanted to build practical skills and move forward in his career at the same time, so an apprenticeship felt like the natural choice.
“I wanted to learn while gaining hands-on experience, and this opportunity offered the perfect blend for my learning style.”
Jason’s early experiences helped him build confidence quickly. Working within Capgemini’s fast-paced internal IT environment meant he was exposed to a wide range of technologies and troubleshooting scenarios, each contributing to his understanding of how infrastructure works in real settings. As his confidence grew, so did his readiness for the next challenge.
After achieving a distinction on his Level 3 IT Technician programme, moving onto the Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeship brought a new level of responsibility. Concepts he had learned previously became real, day-to-day tasks, and Jason stepped into increasingly complex work as the programme progressed.
His manager, Tina Pryce, saw that progression unfold:
“Jason’s dedication to expanding his expertise means he now supports the team with more complex technical issues. His achievement as the first on the programme to complete Networking Level 4 marks an impressive step forward.”
This momentum carried him to a major milestone. Not only was Jason the first Capgemini apprentice on the programme to complete the Level 4 qualification – he achieved a distinction in the process. It was a moment that reflected both his capability and his commitment to continually improving.
Putting Network Engineer Skills Into Practice
One of the highlights of Jason’s apprenticeship was a project that allowed him to design and implement a small-scale network from the ground up. It was the first time he had the opportunity to bring together all the elements he had studied – from planning a secure topology, to configuring switches and routers, to testing the environment and ensuring everything worked as it should.
“Seeing the network come to life and function smoothly after testing was incredibly rewarding – it gave me confidence in my technical decision-making and hands-on configuration skills.”
Projects like this helped Jason see just how far his skills had developed, and how ready he was to contribute at a higher level.
This growing expertise soon translated into real-world impact. During a live onsite event, a guest network issue caused significant disruption – but Jason stepped in, working with Capgemini Group IT to diagnose and resolve the fault.
Tina recalls the effectiveness of his response:
“Thanks to his swift intervention, guest connectivity was restored quickly, ensuring the event continued with minimal impact which the organisers were very grateful for.”
Moments like this demonstrated not just Jason’s technical ability, but his ability to stay calm, assess the situation, and act quickly when it mattered most.
Growing Into a Confident IT Engineer
As Jason moved through his apprenticeship programmes, he became increasingly confident in handling complex technical work. Challenges that once felt daunting became achievable with practice, and he began supporting others in the team as his knowledge deepened:
“Some topics were harder to learn than others, but after practising them and applying my learning to my job, they began to stick.”
His manager saw this shift clearly:
“He’s eager to learn, applies feedback well, and has grown into a confident engineer who now supports others.”
Working in a fast-paced IT environment meant Jason was often balancing demanding, time-sensitive tasks alongside his studies. That balance isn’t easy, especially as responsibilities increase – but having structure around his learning made a noticeable difference.
The mentoring and day-to-day support he received from his team at Capgemini was crucial here, providing Jason with the guidance and confidence he needed as he progressed in his role, and the space to apply what he was learning on the programme.
For Jason, Baltic’s approach provided an additional layer of support, helping him stay focused as he worked through his apprenticeship:
“Baltic made it easy to manage real projects alongside studies with flexible support and structured learning.
“Their personalised approach and dedicated coaches helped me grow both professionally and personally.”
This support didn’t lessen the challenges, but it made them manageable – and helped Jason continue progressing as his role evolved.
Building on His Success
By the time Jason completed his Level 4 apprenticeship, he had already made a meaningful contribution to his team.
As Tina explains, he had taken on work that freed up senior engineers and shown he could handle complex issues with confidence:
“Jason has boosted team productivity by taking on complex issues that save engineers time.”
With the impact he’s already made and the confidence he’s built, Jason was ready for the next step in his development. Completing two apprenticeships with distinction gave him a strong foundation to build on, and he was keen to continue learning and progressing within the industry.
That drive has shaped his next step:
“My next step is to pursue a Level 6 degree in Digital Technology Solutions to further demonstrate my abilities and progress within the industry.”
This next phase will allow him to deepen his technical knowledge while continuing the hands-on approach that has supported his growth so far.
