What is a Data Apprenticeship?

A Data apprenticeship combines paid work with structured training in data management, data analysis, and data engineering. Participants apply learning directly in the workplace, building real-world skills while gaining recognised qualifications.

For employers, it offers a cost-effective way to grow in-house capability, with many apprenticeship programmes funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or Government schemes and grants.

Whether upskilling existing staff or recruiting new talent, a Data apprenticeship enables participants to transform raw data into valuable insights that drive measurable organisational results. With Data Analysis training, learners develop expertise in data collection, analysis, and reporting to improve decision-making.

What Is a Level 3 Data Apprenticeship?

A Level 3 Data apprenticeship is equivalent to an A-Level qualification, and provides a foundation in data literacy and analysis. This programme is most suitable for entry-level data roles or non-technical staff requiring data entry training.

This Data apprenticeship typically covers sourcing, cleaning, and interpreting data, as well as creating reports and visualisations, preparing learners for junior technical roles such as Junior Data Analyst, or for roles that require a level of datahandling in departments like Finance, HR, or Marketing.

By completion, participants will gain a Level 3 Data Technician qualification, and be able to confidently work with datasets, identify trends, and contribute to evidence-based decision-making, helping organisations strengthen their use of data across departments.

Why Choose Data Apprenticeships?

Develop Practical Data Skills

Data apprenticeships equip learners with hands-on data analytics training that goes beyond theory.

Learners gain practical experience in the tools, techniques, and processes organisations rely on to manage and interpret information effectively, learning to collect, clean, and validate datasets; use SQL, Python, and BI software; and create dashboards that transform raw data into actionable insights.

Unlike a short data analyst course or a standalone data management course, an apprenticeship embeds these skills in day-to-day work. Apprentices apply their learning directly to real business priorities, improving accuracy, efficiency, and reporting.

For businesses, this means quicker, more informed decisions, reduced errors, and stronger performance.

Support Digital Transformation

Data apprenticeships help develop in-house talent that supports long-term digital transformation.

Digital transformation is the process of using digital tools, technologies, and data to fundamentally improve how a business operates and delivers value to its customers. It’s about reshaping processes, culture, and strategy to become more agile, efficient, and competitive.

Apprentices learn how to manage, analyse, and present information effectively across platforms, improving how data flows between teams and enabling smarter, faster decision-making.

Effective data leads directly to improved efficiency, reduced costs, and stronger customer experiences. By investing in digital capability now, organisations build resilience, stay competitive in a rapidly changing market, and unlock new opportunities for growth.

Maximise Return on Investment

With Data apprenticeships, learning happens alongside daily responsibilities, so businesses don’t need to wait until the end of the programme to see results.

Apprentices apply new skills to live business challenges from day one, improving data quality, speeding up reporting, and spotting trends that inform strategy, and because data skills are rooted in efficiency – reducing waste, saving time, and improving accuracy – they naturally encourage a stronger return on investment across the business.

Additionally, unlike purely academic routes, apprenticeship training is often funded through the Apprenticeship Levy or Government support, making it a cost-effective alternative to a commercial data analyst course.

FAQS FOR DATA APPRENTICESHIPS

FAQs for Employers

A Data apprenticeship is a government-backed training programme that develops participants’ technical and analytical skills through a mix of workplace learning and structured study, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Data apprenticeships give your team practical skills to make better use of data, helping to close skills gaps and strengthen your organisation’s capability. They can also boost efficiency and provide a clear development path for staff, which often improves retention.

Data apprenticeships suit teams that handle reporting, analytics, or decision-making, such as technical teams like data and IT, or operations, finance, marketing, and HR, where evidence-based insights drive better outcomes.

Funding depends on the size of your business and the apprentice’s age.

Large employers can use their Apprenticeship Levy to cover costs.

Smaller employers only pay 5% if the apprentice is aged 22 or over, with the government covering the remaining 95%. However, if the apprentice is 21 or under, the government pays the full training cost.

Absolutely! Apprenticeships are open to staff of all ages and can upskill your current workforce to take on more data-driven roles.

Yes, Data apprenticeships are a great recruitment option – allowing you to attract and hire new talent who will work towards their qualification while contributing genuine business value from day one.

A good training provider (like us!) will guide you through each step, from checking funding eligibility to completing paperwork and registering the apprentice on the National Apprenticeship Service.

Most Data programmes run between 12 – 24 months, depending on the level and the apprentice’s prior experience.

A Data apprenticeship combines technical training sessions and workplace learning.

Apprentices spend most of their working time completing their normal job role and responsibilities, with at least 20% of their week dedicated to off-the-job learning through workshops, online study, or project work linked to the business.

Assessment for Data apprenticeships is ongoing throughout the programme with assignments, projects, and skills reviews. At the end, apprentices complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA), carried out by an independent organisation, to confirm they’ve met the required Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs).

A Data apprenticeship is a government-backed training programme that develops participants’ technical and analytical skills through a mix of workplace learning and structured study, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

A Data apprenticeship combines paid, hands-on work experience with study, whereas University is full-time academic learning without guaranteed industry experience.

No, unlike University, apprenticeships are fully funded by the government and employers, so you won’t pay tuition fees.

You’ll develop technical skills like data analysis, visualisation, and programming, alongside professional skills such as problem-solving, communication, and project management.

You can search and apply through the government’s Find an Apprenticeship service, training providers, or directly with employers offering data roles.

When choosing a Data apprenticeship, think about the level of the programme, the employer’s industry, and the career opportunities it could lead to after completion.

Your options include Data Technician, Data Analyst, and Data Engineer apprenticeships, each suited to different stages of your career and technical ability.

You could progress into specialist roles like Data Scientist or Data Engineer, or step into leadership positions as your experience grows.

If you’re aged 16 – 18, achieving Level 2 Maths and English is a required part of your apprenticeship unless you already have them, and you’ll get live training and tailored support to help you succeed.

If you’re 19 or older, it’s not compulsory, but you can still choose to work towards these qualifications with the same training and resources, and all learners have access to personalised support throughout their programme.

It depends on the level: you don’t need prior experience for entry-level or foundational programmes, but advanced apprenticeships may require existing knowledge of common tools and techniques. Either way, a genuine interest in numbers, technology, and problem-solving will help you succeed.

You will achieve a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification, graded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
