Apprenticeship Levy

The Apprenticeship Levy enables Schools, Trusts, and education providers to fund apprenticeships in education and staff development apprenticeships with minimal cost and maximum impact.

Employers with an annual wage bill over £3 million contribute to the Levy, which can be used to cover 100% of apprenticeship training and assessment costs – supporting essential career development for teachers, leadership pathways, and upskilling programmes for teachers.

As Apprenticeship Levy specialists, we provide expert guidance to help Schools and MATs make the most of their available funds. From identifying eligible programmes to supporting you claim your funds, we simplify the Levy process for you.

Co-Investment Model

For Schools, Trusts, and education providers that do not pay into the Apprenticeship Levy, the Co-Investment Model offers an accessible and affordable way to fund apprenticeship training.

Under this approach, the government funds 95% of the apprenticeship training and assessment costs, leaving the employer to contribute the remaining 5%. In some cases, this contribution is fully funded, for example, when apprentices are between 16 – 21, or up to 24 if they have been in care or have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan.

Co-Investment allows smaller organisations to access the same high-quality training opportunities as larger employers, ensuring every School or organisation can invest in upskilling staff, developing leadership capacity, and building a confident workforce.

Levy Transfers

If you’re not a Levy-paying organisation, you can still benefit from the Apprenticeship Levy through a Levy transfer.

Larger employers can transfer up to 25% of their unused Levy funds to other Schools, Trusts, or education providers, enabling other organisations to access fully funded apprenticeship programmes. A Levy transfer covers the 5% employer contribution usually required under the Co-Investment Model, meaning apprenticeships can be delivered at no cost to your organisation.

We’re proud to work with organisations nationwide who use their Levy funds to support CPD opportunities for teachers and staff across this highly valued sector.

If you’d like to explore apprenticeships but don’t currently have the budget, we’d love to discuss how we can help you secure a Levy transfer to fund your organisation’s professional development goals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Professional development for teachers enhances teaching practice, subject knowledge, and confidence.

CPD is equally essential for teaching assistants, support staff, and wider School and Multi-Academy Trust-based teams and education employees. High-quality CPD helps staff adapt to curriculum changes, digital transformation, and evolving learner needs – supporting both individual growth and whole-organisation improvement.

The benefits of professional development for teachers and wider education staff include improved teaching quality, stronger digital capability, better classroom support, and more effective operations. For schools and MATs, CPD boosts retention, supports succession planning, and ensures every staff member – from teachers to wider teams – has the skills needed to succeed.

Apprenticeships provide high-impact staff development for teachers, teaching assistants, support roles, and wider School and Trust departments. Whether it’s digital skills, IT support, leadership, data, or marketing, apprenticeships in education help build long-term capability across the entire organisation – not just the classroom.

Key areas for development as a teacher or wider School and Trust staff include digital skills, data literacy, and inclusive practice. As education becomes more digitally driven, building strong digital, data, IT, and leadership skills across all roles is essential. Apprenticeships provide structured pathways to develop these skills effectively.

Schools and MATs can access the Apprenticeship Levy, the Co-Investment Model, or Levy Transfers to fund training for teachers, support staff, and wider School and Trust teams. This makes staff development apprenticeships a cost-effective and sustainable way to upskill the whole workforce.

Improving IT skills for teachers and wider staff can be achieved through short courses, Microsoft & CompTIA certifications, and IT and digital apprenticeships. These routes support and strengthen digital fluency across classrooms, support functions, and Trust operations.

Schools and MATs can develop staff through apprenticeships by mapping skills gaps across teaching, operations, and central Trust functions. Apprenticeships support teachers, support roles, digital teams, and leaders – offering structured development that strengthens whole-organisation capability.

Providing structured career development for teachers and support staff through apprenticeships increases job satisfaction and strengthens retention. When staff across all roles have clear development pathways – from classroom teams to central Trust departments – they feel valued, supported, and more committed to staying long-term.
