The apprentice will learn set them up on unified communications systems and to resolve problems when they arise. This service can be delivered face-to-face, on the phone or online. They are required to install equipment and software and handle incidents and requests for help, including providing fault diagnostic across a broad range of unified communications technologies in accordance with business service level agreements.

Unit 1
Network Fundamentals MTA

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the Smart Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This course is an official Microsoft Technology Associate course. It gives learners the opportunity to pass an official Microsoft exam. This course introduces learners to the basics of networking technologies, providing a broad scope of subject knowledge.

Unit 2
BCS Voice & Data Solutions

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the Smart Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This course provides learners with knowledge of a range of concepts, approaches and techniques that are applicable to voice and data solutions.

Unit 3
BCS Security Principles

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the Smart Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This unit covers a range of concepts, approaches and techniques that are applicable to servers. The unit allows for apprentices to gain experience installing and configuring a server. Apprentices are required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of these topics in an exam setting.

  • Describe and explain the different platforms and operating systems
  • Recognise secure communications interface
  • Describe and explain encryption and auditing principles
  • Identify the appropriate tools to rectify known security threats
  • Identify how to prevent future threats from known security threats
Unit 4
BCS Server

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the Smart Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This unit covers a range of concepts, approaches and techniques that are applicable to servers. The unit allows for apprentices to gain experience installing and configuring a server. Apprentices are required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of these topics in an exam setting.

Functional Skills

This is subject to evidence provided.

Learners who require Functional Skills will be supported using the Smart Classroom and the sessions will last half a day each. Exams will be held in a local test centre.

End Point Assessment
The End Point Assessment is completed in the last few months of the apprenticeship. It includes an Employer Reference, Summative Portfolio, Synoptic Project and an Interview.

Our Smart Classrooms are technology enhanced, cloud-based classrooms that deliver training by integrating learning technology. 

Workplace Activities

On this programme, an apprentice is required to evidence the following activities in the workplace:

  • Configure and troubleshoot voice solutions including hardware and software failures
  • Install, configure and troubleshoot Data solutions including switches and access points
  • Install, configure and troubleshoot Network Services solutions including line faults and internet speed problems
  • Configure and maintain a domain service including assigning services, deploying software and applying updates
  • Configure and maintain a network including selecting appropriate network components and applying networking fundamentals
  • Configure and maintain security principles covering software, access, encryption and auditing
  • Configure and maintain servers including storage, print services, group policy and updates
  • Configure and maintain client software, including managing user profiles and troubleshooting user issues
