Janice Cartwright - Functional Skills Support

Topic

[Trainers and Assessors]

Having worked as a Functional Skills tutor for many years I was made redundant twice in 3 years. This role became available and it was a complete change in direction to be able to help and support apprentices individually on a daily basis.

I decided to make a change in 2000 and joined a course to become a teacher. Now hold Certificate in Education, subject specialisms in both English and maths as well as ITQ level 3 and an assessor qualification.

Too many to mention really. But edited highlights are, Checkout operative, Supervisor in a clothing factory, Counter assistant in Ladbrokes, Supply teacher in HMYOI, Maths specialist for Durham County, Family Learning Tutor, Functional Skills Tutor, Internal Verifier for City and Guilds entry level maths, Functional Skills Tutor teaching from a porta-cabin on a Carillion builders’ yard and Functional Skills Support at Baltic training.

Working at Baltic

Started at Baltic in September 2016.

Within my role I arrange all webinars and test dates for apprentices who require Functional Skills. I have to make sure I am available for any apprentice to call or email should they require any help and support throughout their Functional Skills Programme. Teach internal apprentices English and maths, invigilate tests and create study guides to aid apprentices complete their revision.

I  enjoy the contact with the apprentices and finding solutions to their English and maths problems.

My role changes as every week goes by as you never stop learning or developing when you work in Functional Skills.

#1 Item on Bucket List

Never wanted or needed to do anything crazy in life.

Just hoping for health to enjoy life for many years to come.

Greatest Achievement

Still alive.

I was seriously ill at 13 and even now the GP has to complete a report that I am still alive every year on my birthday.

Hobbies and Interests

Granddaughter due to arrive in July 2019 so life will revolve around her.

Until then knitting and watching TV occupies work nights.

At the weekend, with my partner, travel the country to visit steam fairs (traction engines and vintage vehicles).
