I was working for a national training and apprenticeship provider mostly in the north east on a variety of apprenticeships including Digital Marketing, and heard of Baltic through another employee. I liked the idea of using IT to teach IT and was delighted when I was offered the position as assessor.
I was born and raised in Northumberland and attended school in Newcastle. My qualifications come from within work as I have been able to progress my own qualifications during my employment. Hence why I am such a strong advocate for workplace learning. I have achieved a Management qualification followed by a post graduate award in Training and Development. I gained my assessors and internal verification awards whilst working in Gateshead and got my teaching awards whilst working in the local college.
I have worked on apprenticeship programmes for some years now and really enjoy the interaction with learners. I started working on qualifications when working for a electrical manufacturing company in Gateshead when they wished to develop awards for their staff. The chosen route was then NVQ's and I was asked to take this forward. I progressed within this role getting to be their Group HR Manager. Moving from there I then worked for two Police Forces in an HR and Training capacity and then into a local college where I lectured and assessed in Management, coaching and foundation degrees. Some time self employed followed and then I worked for a national training and apprenticeship provider mostly in the north east on a variety of apprenticeships including Digital Marketing.
I have had the privilege of serving in the Territorial Army (now the Reserves) and believe that the skills that I developed of working in teams, organising, planning and co-ordination, coupled with my interpersonal skills give me some of the transferable knowledge and experience for my role.
I have worked for Baltic since the beginning of April 2019.
I work as an assessor for learners undertaking apprenticeships, mostly in Digital Marketing and am now developing to working with learners for the IT Infrastructure Technician's course. I am involved from the beginning of the apprenticeship courses and enjoy the interaction with my learners. I undertake reviews every six weeks with each learner, teach aspects of the course, during these reviews and guide the learners through the competency aspects of their course. I set and explain the assessment plans and assess these against the standards. I arrange and monitor each learner's progression.
I wanted to work for Baltic because of the opportunity to use IT to teach and assess IT.
I am most looking forward to continuing to develop my skills and experience to the benefit of my learners and the company.
Seeing the Northern Lights as I have always been fascinated with the night sky.
Being interviewed by ITV Tyne Tees News about an Army exercise that I was running. My five minutes of fame!!
Abseiling in Wales as I don't like heights!!
I really enjoy walking and as we have a dog I will be found outside taking him for long walks and as we are close to the countryside we can go miles in the fresh air.
I also enjoy cooking, especially curry and spending time with my family as we discover parts of our local heritage. I also have an interest in history and this means we will often be enjoying places of local interest as well.
