As you may have read in the news recently, what3words is a very useful app to have. After a group of friends got lost in Hamsterley Forest, it was their unique 3 word location that ensured they were quickly found by the search and rescue team. Emergency services have recommended downloading the app before you need it, as it might just save your life!
How does it work?
Each 3m square in the world has been assigned a 3 word address that will never change. For example ///filled.count.soap marks the exact entrance to what3words’ London headquarters. There are over 57 trillion squares in total, all of them totally unique.
The system is more accurate than a postcode, and less confusing than a street name, as it avoids duplicates. It also provides a way for people to pinpoint exact locations in places that don’t have addresses such as hiking trails or natural landmarks. If you’re prone to getting lost, it can even help you find your car or festival tent!
How can I access it?
Just search what3words on the Apple Store or Google Play to download it to your smartphone. It’s completely free to use and can also be accessed via your computer, tablet or smartphone browser.
