SME Funding: Teesside Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy Now Available

Teesside SMEs are about to see a boost in financial support for apprenticeships, thanks to a new funding scheme from the Tees Valley Combined Authority. In response to Coronavirus and the concerns of local employers, TVCA has earmarked a £1m fund to subsidise the wages of around 100 new apprentices across the region.

Through this scheme, employers can fund 100% of apprentices’ wages for the first 6 months of their programme, followed by 50% funding for the rest of the apprenticeship, up to a maximum of 2 years.

This scheme has the potential to transform the way that Teesside businesses recruit and develop their team, creating sustainable, high quality career opportunities for young people in the area and strengthening the talent pipeline right here in Teesside.

Am I eligible?

The wage subsidy fund is open to SME businesses based in the Tees Valley area, covering Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-On-Tees. Funding is available for new apprentices, enrolling on a Level 3 apprenticeship programme in the following priority sectors:

  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Process, Chemicals and Energy
  • Logistics
  • Health and Biologics
  • Digital and Creative – including the digital and tech apprenticeship programmes offered by us at Baltic
  • Business and Professional Services
  • Construction
  • Health Care
  • Culture and Leisure
  • Education

For this scheme, apprentices must be aged 16-20, and the Combined Authority recommend that apprentices are paid the National Minimum Wage rather than the lower National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage – which is fantastic news for candidates!

What can Baltic Apprenticeships offer through this scheme?

This wage support from the Combined Authority is an exciting opportunity for many Teesside businesses to take on an apprentice for the first time. At Baltic, we’re here to help guide you through the process, find the very best candidates for your team, and support you and your new apprentice throughout the training programme.

We offer apprenticeships under three subject umbrellas: IT Support, Digital Marketing and Software Development. In the North East, each subject is linked to a pre-apprenticeship skills programme, delivered in partnership with the wonderful team at RAW Digital Training.

The RAW Digital Talent Academy enables us to create a really strong talent pool for businesses in the North East, equipped with the skills and behaviours that local employers tell us they need from their digital apprentices.

These two-week programmes in Digital Marketing, Software Development and IT Support offer young people an intensive introduction to their chosen subject, picking up the basic skills, knowledge and work-ready behaviours to give them a head-start on their apprenticeship.

To secure an apprentice candidate from one of the upcoming RAW Digital Talent Academies, or to find out more about how an apprentice could fit into your organisation, please feel free to get in touch with our team.
