[Apprentice]

We’re back with another instalment of our Meet the Champions blog series!

Today, we’re introducing you to Richard, a Level 4 Data Analyst apprentice at Acton Banks.

Read on to hear Richard share his thoughts on apprenticeships, life hacks he wishes he knew before starting his programme – along with some great career insights!

Q: BEFORE YOU STARTED YOUR APPRENTICESHIP, WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER GOALS AND EXPERIENCES?

Before I started my apprenticeship, I was working with clients across Greater London, supporting them with their marketing and website design.

I’ve always been interested in tech, whether that was teaching the subject at a school selling technology for companies such as Apple. No matter what job I worked in, my goal was to simply give 100%.

This paid off as I broke multiple tech sales records during my time at EE, received an award from Apple, and landed a job as an ICT Teacher – without a degree!

Q:WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT TAKING THE APPRENTICESHIP ROUTE?

I read many articles from the BBC and The Guardian, explored multiple data forums, and conducted general research which indicated that apprenticeships are growing in popularity and many people are now considering an apprenticeship as a viable career path.

I’m a firm believer that the best kind of education is learning by doing and with my learning style, I knew that a practical hands-on approach would allow me to thrive. This gave me the belief that starting a career as an apprentice would pay off!

Q:WHAT KINDS OF TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR JOB ROLE?

I have a variety of responsibilities within my organisation. I’m fortunate enough to have great directors & managers that have given me the roles and responsibilities most Data Analysts would only dream about. I’m responsible for many interesting tasks such as:

  • Pulling daily reports from front-end SQL databases
  • Applying Excel formulas to weekly reports
  • Publishing and editing over 260 Microsoft Power BI pages on a weekly basis, each one for a different department
  • Being the Salesforce Master, Admin & Data Analyst
  • Liaising with directors
  • Working with Excel and applying formulas
  • Creating new dashboards for KPIs, company margins, competitors, & other exciting data reports

Q:WHAT HAS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT BEEN IN YOUR APPRENTICESHIP JOURNEY SO FAR?

I created a new Power BI dashboard that directors, managers, recruiters, & our sales team now regularly use for many different reasons.

The Dashboard consists of a map of the United Kingdom, with integrating tooltips that display specific information for a postcode. I spent around 80 hours gathering, troubleshooting, and applying this data in such a way that it syncs with every click.

The CEO was so pleased with this dashboard that he offered me a permanent position just six months into my apprenticeship.

Q:What data tips, tools, or life hacks do you wish you had known about earlier?

My main tip would be to go at your own pace and don’t compare yourself with others. You’ll be surprised at how fast you recognise what kind or learner you are and how fast you’re able to perform in an industry you knew nothing about. We all have our own learning styles and patterns, and these shouldn’t be compared.

Another tip would be to make sure you speak with others as this helps ease the pressure! This example is specific to my role, but if someone requests a new report or a change to an existing one, I would spend with them to learn exactly what they want. This could be as simple as what they want the report to look like, what features it would have – put simply, communication is key and never be afraid to ask questions or for more information.

Finally, always believe in yourself, believe you can achieve anything and that you will succeed!
