Part of our commitment to changing futures means providing career opportunities that are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background and level of education. When recruiting for our apprenticeship vacancies, we look beyond qualifications and experience to find the right people for the right roles.

With this in mind, we offer functional skills courses in English and Maths that run alongside our apprenticeship programmes. This ensures our learners are equipped with the fundamental knowledge they need to succeed on their apprenticeship, in the workplace and beyond.

From September 2019 onwards, we’re changing the way we deliver our functional skills training to improve the experience for our apprentices and employers.

Is functional skills a requirement?

Functional skills training is a requirement for apprentices who don’t already have level 2 (GCSE A*-C or equivalent) qualifications in Maths and English. All learners who can provide evidence of prior qualifications before their induction will be exempt from functional skills training; everyone else will be automatically enrolled onto the courses.

Delivery method

Functional skills training will take place in our interactive online learning environment, the SMART Classroom. The nature of this online training means that apprentices can log on and learn their functional skills from their workplace or from home.

For both English and Maths, the training will take place over the course of a week, with 3 days of SMART Classroom training and 1 location based exam on the Thursday or Friday. Wherever possible, these courses will take place within the first 12 weeks of the apprenticeship, giving learners the best possible start to their training.

The new block booking delivery model replicates the training schedule of our technical courses, giving learners an in-depth knowledge with detailed learning outcomes. We look forward to developing the skills and changing the futures of many more young people through our improved delivery model.
