If you are looking to start your career in digital marketing, or maybe just have a keen interest and want to develop your skills there are lots of online resources you can use to take your skills to the next level.

Google Analytics Academy

If you’re looking to gain digital marketing skills, Google is a fantastic place to start. Not only does it hold the answer to every question you could ever possible ask, but Google Analytics is a digital marketer’s best friend when it comes to tracking web traffic. Due to popular demand and a requirement for beginner, intermediate and advanced training, Google Analytics Academy was born. This free tool takes users from creating their accounts to the most complex analysis and marketing tools.

Facebook Blueprint

Facebook Blueprint is a series of free, self-paced online courses and learning paths you can take to learn more about advertising on Facebook and Instagram. You can choose from a wide range of topics, and select learning paths that align with business goals. All you need to sign up for Blueprint eLearning is a Facebook account. With various certifications and over 80 different training paths, this is a great place to start if you are thinking of starting your career with a company who uses Facebook as part of their strategy.

Digital Garage

Another offering from Google, the Digital Garage is a free service that helps users increase their knowledge of all things digital, from websites and tracking, to online marketing and beyond. Develop the digital skills needed to grow a business, a career or just your confidence. There is a range of subjects and topics designed to help develop digital knowledge from social media to search engines. Users can pick and choose the topics they need, or complete the whole online course for a certification from Google and IAB Europe.

Code Academy

If you’re hoping to work in digital marketing, knowledge of code on some level can come in pretty handy. You may be supporting with managing your own CMS and need to make everyday changes, but how can you learn how? This is where Codecademy can be extremely useful. This online tool was created to provide aspiring coders with easy access to training in various aspects of coding. From refresher units on certain coding languages to full certifications, this online community can take you from novice, to well on the way to an expert in no time.

Free photo editing and image creation tools

Imagery is a huge aspect of digital marketing, so honing your skills even before you start your first role is incredibly important. From photo editing to creating infographics and social media images, there are a wide range of visual media that as a digital marketer, you may need to try your hand at. By getting to grips with some industry standard, but free tools, will allow you to hit the ground running on day one. For free photo editing software, GIMP is a fantastic place to start. The layout, functions, and capability are very similar to programmes used in industry so by practicing editing your own photos using this tool will allow you to transfer your skills right away. 

Creating infographics, social media images and other visuals is a huge part of a digital marketer role and a fantastic outlet for your creativity. Of course, you don’t need specialist software to release your creativity, but just encase you need a helping hand with layout ideas or getting to grips with sizing, there are two tools we would recommend. Piktochart and Canva are two very similar online platforms that allow you to create free accounts and play around with the features to create engaging and professional images and infographics. They both perform in a similar way, allowing you to be as creative as you like, so we would recommend taking a look at both and seeing which platform suits you the most.
