Course Summary

The primary role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. Network engineers need to maintain high levels of operation of communication networks in order to provide maximum performance and availability for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They will understand network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and be able to give technical advice and guidance.

Unit 1
CompTIA Server+

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the SMART Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

CompTIA Server+ certified candidates can work in any environment because it is the only vendor-neutral certification covering the major server platforms. It is the only industry certification that covers the latest server technologies including virtualisation, security and network-attached storage (NAS).■ Server Architecture

Unit 2
NETWORK SYSTEMS AND ARCHITECTURE

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the SMART Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This unit provides learners with an understanding of the role of a network engineer who plans, installs, configures, maintains and supports complex computer networks. Learners will gain an Understanding of different network layering models, physical and logical network components, TCP/ IP network configuration, network servers and services, and associated security concepts.

Unit 3
Network Principles

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the SMART Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This unit provides learners with an understanding of the role of a network engineer who plans, installs, configures, maintains and supports complex computer networks. Learners will gain an understanding of different network layering models, physical and logical network components, TCP/IP network configuration, network servers and services, and associated security concepts.

■ Understand the concepts of IP addressing and routing

Unit 4
Network Security

This unit is delivered over 4 days through the SMART Classroom, followed by a 1 day exam at a local test centre.

This course provides learners the ability to recognise security threats, employ countermeasures and be able to plan for, and configure, network security.

■ Understand how to configure network security

Functional Skills
  • Level 2 – Maths (5 day course, SMART Classroom & 1 day exam)
  • Level 2 – English (5 day course, SMART Classroom & 1 day exam)

Functional skills will be delivered via SMART Classroom, with full day sessions over the course of a week.  At the end of the week, learners will be required to sit a final exam held at a local test centre. In order to be exempt from this training, sufficient evidence on prior qualifications should be provided before induction.  Learners who do not provide relevant exception certificates will be automatically enrolled onto the additional courses.

End Point Assessment
The End Point Assessment is completed in the last few months of the apprenticeship. It includes an Employer Reference, Summative Portfolio, Synoptic Project and an Interview.
